Cliff Lede Vineyards: The VIP Experience

It’s been a little over a year since I’ve been to Cliff Lede in Yountville. Last year some friends from back east were visiting and they had it on the itinerary. I remember three things about Cliff Lede: How much I enjoyed the High Fidelity Red Blend, the music playlist, and there was a funny wine specialist that had us laughing the entire time.

We arrived on time or so I thought lol. When we arrived, we were escorted over to a reserved VIP section with comfortable seating that was heavily shaded. It was 100+ degrees outside so I was glad to have splurged on an elevated experience. I was anxious to view the selection which included:

2017 FEL Chardonnay, Savoy Vineyard, Andersen Valley

2017 FEL Pinot Noir, Wendling Vineyard, Anderson Valley.

2016 Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon, Calistoga.

2017 “Dancing Heart” Cabernet Sauvignon, Stag Leap District.

2017 Cliff Lede Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville

Dork in a chair

A familiar looking man comes over and says, “I’m Bob, your wine specialist. I’m so glad you guys are here.  I thought you guys weren’t going to make it. Let me go grab some cold towelettes and I’ll be right back.” After he walked away I immediately grab my phone and see a missed call. We arrived at 3:02pm and I thought our appointment was for 3pm but after looking at my confirmation I realized it was for 2:45pm. I hate being late! Bob comes back and I start to apologize but he stops me and says, “Don’t you dare apologize! I just wanted to make sure everything was okay when I called.” The cold towelette was starting to cool me off so I was ready for the first wine. Bob pours the first wine and that feeling comes that I’ve seen him before. When Bob walks away I am about to turn to my wife to ask her but she is rocking out to “Stairway to Heaven” Wayne’s World-style in her chair so I give it a moment. I said to her, “Do we know him?” She smiled and said, “Bob poured for us last year and we really liked him” and then she went back to air guitaring in her seat. Bob comes back and I tell him the story. He immediately described the day, the people we came with, and thought we looked really familiar when we arrived. We really enjoyed catching up with him, talking about the 70s/80s playlist, and of course, the wine. At the end of the tasting Bob handed me his card and wrote his number on that back. I assured him that it won’t be another year before we come back.
